Andrew Hutchison, PhD

I am a "complete" AMO physicist, in that I have conducted research in all three letters of the acronym.  I have performed neutral atom trapping, molecular spectroscopy to characterize gas-surface interactions, and characterization of nonlinear optical materials.  As a result, I have broad experience in AMO instrumentation.  I have not only operated a wide range of optical, electronic, mechanical, and vacuum apparatus.  I have also successfully performed repairs, upgrades and prototyping within those systems.

I enjoy teaching science, instrumentation and statistics.  I was a TA for nine years, mostly leading student groups in a laboratory setting.  For over half of that time, I taught "modern physics laboratory," which is an upper-division undergraduate physics course on conducting complex experiments, long-form technical writing, and data analysis methods.  Understanding how we know what we know is just as as important as knowing what we know.
